Troubles prevented me from posting a review of this show yesterday then that pesky rodent who lives down by the docks scooped me on the Eyes reccomendation. However this is a very interesting show that if you like 81 and the toy piano you should give a listen to. A word of caution though, Jerry starts out low in the mix and sadly no reviews tell you this.

For some backstory on the source, I found this in the textfiles on speedingarrow from Jim:

The '81 European Gift story: Several years ago, a friend of mine had a job at a very large airplane manufacturer near Seattle. One day, someone he'd never spoken with walked up to him in the plant and handed him a briefcase, saying only he'd heard my friend was a deadhead. What he found inside was SBDs of nearly the entire Fall '81 European Tour (the only shows missing were 10/11/81 and 10/15/81 at the Melkweg). I was recruited to dub the tapes for him, and made a set for myself. Many of these shows are now in circulation with better gens, but this is one of several that don't circulate either at all or as SBDs as of the time of this seeding. Enjoy, and let's see if the masters surface!f the time of this seeding. Enjoy, and let's see if the masters surface!

This is the same source as the link above. The sound is good but not a crispy board, we can only hope that Jim is right and masters surfaces. The other issue is that Jerry is from low to silent in the mix until Tenn Jed. This is really frustrating because what you can hear of him you can tell his ready to play.

Here are my notes while listening:

Shakedown: Where's Jerry?

Bertha: All I hear is Brent's organ, nice quick pace and then Phil comes through about 1.5 min in.

Minglewood: sounds good but no Jerry!!

FOTD: Hey Jerry has a guitar afterall! Still too low but it is nice.

El Paso: With Jerry low in the mix it sounds like Brent is playing carnival music in the beginning, Jerry finally on board at the end.

Tenn Jed: Nice to have Jerry back where he belongs. Bob yells "wake up" 6 min in.

MAMU>Big River: nice sound

Birdsong: Bill (i assume) has a very jazzy cymbal thing going to start. The jam is really a nice jazzy one with Brent and Jerry playing off each other. I like this better than the acoustic one played at Club Mek Welk a few days later!!

LIG - are there any bad '81 LIGs? This is hot!

Deal: The heat continues

Man Smart, Woman Smarter: Why does this song have two names?

Sugaree: Jerry really into this one, goes nuts about 7 min in.

LS>SoC: nice

Eyes: 7:43 seconds of blazing fury. (nice call Wharf!!)

Drums>Space: fine

Truckin': The damn whistle!! I hate that thing!! Don't like the sex change line either.

TOO>Wharf: Thats better, very nice.

OMSN: had to turn it off halfway in, sounded pretty standard for the time

Casey Jones: did not listen (sorry).

I would definitely reccomend this show for the eyes, birdsong, sugaree and LIG. You may want to skip the first few songs because it can get frustrating.
